Understand carbon monoxide risks, when to seek urgent help and why qualified gas work matters. Safety guidance for York homeowners and landlords, with links to NHS advice.
Choose qualified gas appliance servicing
Faulty or poorly maintained fuel-burning appliances can produce carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas you cannot see or smell. Use an appropriately qualified Gas Safe registered engineer for gas installation and maintenance. Check their registration and the types of work they are qualified to carry out. For routine boiler or gas fire servicing in York, contact Tom to discuss the appliance and arrange a visit.
Go outside and seek medical advice if you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning. Do not return until advised it is safe. Call NHS 111 for suspected symptoms. Call 999 for difficulty breathing, sudden confusion, unconsciousness, weakness, or chest or muscle pain following suspected exposure. If a gas appliance may be leaking carbon monoxide, call 0800 111 999 immediately. Do not wait for a routine plumbing appointment.
Carbon monoxide alarms and prevention
Fit audible carbon monoxide alarms in rooms containing fuel-burning appliances and follow their instructions. Keep appliances, flues and ventilation properly maintained. Alarms complement regular servicing; they do not replace it. Read the NHS guidance below for symptoms and emergency advice.
