Frozen & Burst Pipes in York: Prevention & Advice

Learn how to protect your pipes from freezing, what to do if a pipe bursts and when to call a plumber. Practical winter plumbing advice from Tom Whitelam in York.

How to prevent frozen pipes

Cold weather can leave exposed pipework vulnerable to freezing. Before winter arrives, check water pipes in unheated areas such as lofts, garages and outbuildings. Replace missing or damaged pipe insulation, also known as lagging, and fit a suitable cover to outdoor taps. Keeping your home heated during cold spells can also help protect your plumbing. If you are going away, plan frost protection before you leave. For more preparation tips, see Yorkshire Water’s winter advice.

What to do if a water pipe bursts

If a pipe bursts, turn off the water at your internal stop tap if you can reach it safely, then contact a plumber. Know where the stop tap is before an emergency and keep access clear; it is often under the kitchen sink. Keep away from wet electrical fittings and do not touch switches or appliances affected by water. Explain where the leak is and whether you have managed to turn off the supply when you call.
